As of the fourth quarter of 2025, 60.1 percent of internet users worldwide went online to find information, making it the leading reason for internet use globally. Staying in touch with friends and family ranked as the second-most common online activity, with 57.7 percent of users engaging in it.

Mobile vs. desktop

In the past decade, internet usage shifted toward mobile devices. In the second quarter of 2024, 96.2 percent of internet users globally accessed the web via mobile devices, highlighting their widespread adoption. In online activity, mobile phones generated 60 percent of all web page views by January 2024. Additionally, users spent most of their daily internet time, at around 57 percent, on mobile devices, while computers accounted for 43 percent.

TikTok and short video

Seemingly overnight, short videos have become one of the most consumed forms of user-generated content. TikTok and Instagram were the two leading platforms for social and short-form video content as of the first quarter of 2024. Furthermore, TikTok’s surge in popularity in recent years turned it into one of the most downloaded mobile apps worldwide. Its success continued as TikTok content recorded the highest video views across all account sizes.
