In fiscal year 2024/25, the marketing and advertising income of J Sainsbury plc stood at *** million British pounds, up ** percent from the *** million pounds the company made a year earlier. The income is generated by selling both in-store and digital ad spaces.

In-store retail media

Together with Clear Channel UK, the retailer operates Sainsbury’s Live, which is a network of digital six-sheet screens in its stores. In 2023, the network consisted of *** screens. In the fall of 2023, it was announced that it would grow to over *** screens. To compare, the retailer operated around 1,454 stores as of March 2025. Addressing the growing consumer focus on sustainability, the new screens will be significantly more energy-efficient, and the entire network will use renewable energy.

Digital retail media

Advertising in Sainsbury’s online shop is managed by Sainsbury's subsidiary Nectar 360 Services LLP in partnership with Publicis Groupe’s CitrusAd, which is an auction-based software developed specifically with e-commerce retailers in mind. Brands can run targeted sponsored product ad campaigns as well as banners. Additionally, in early 2024, the launch of so-called “branded shops” on sainsbury.co.uk was announced. Consumers would be able to find all products of a particular brand on a dedicated sub-page, managed and designed by the brands themselves.
