Generation Alpha in the United States - statistics & facts
Comprising around 13 percent of the population and counting, Generation Alpha is the current youngest generation succeeding Generation Z in the United States. While definitions vary, Gen Alpha typically refers to the demographic group born after the early 2010s until 2025. Although the oldest members of Gen Alpha are only adolescents, many of them already emphasize the importance of helping people, protecting people from bullying, and treating everyone equally. When asked what elected officials should focus on in 2023, Gen Alphas were most likely to advocate for protection against gun violence and a solution to food insecurity. This desire to promote a safer society for all depicts the unparalleled diversity of America’s youngest citizens; as the first generation to have less than half of their population identifying as white, Gen Alpha is expected to be the most racially diverse generation group yet.
Gen Alpha minorities are also less likely to report feeling like their school respects who they are, regardless of their race, gender, or identity, particularly after many states implemented policies restricting race-related and LGBTQ+ topics in K-12 schools. However, most students have no problem with discussing race or gender identity in the classroom, suggesting that the diverse values of U.S. youth may aid in eradicating any remaining racial tension among their peers. For 96 percent of Gen Alpha, ensuring that all people are treated fairly, no matter what they look like, is a main priority. This ongoing emphasis on equality and individualism points to the possibility of overcoming all inequalities still faced by Gen Alpha adults in the future.
Gen Alpha's affinity for technology may also adversely affect their education, as the rise of remote classrooms and virtual learning led to declines in test scores and disadvantages due to technological devices. Additionally, concerns arose around the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in academic assignments, with 76 percent of private school parents concerned about the effects of AI on their child’s learning as of 2023. According to the American public, however, learning AI skills is necessary for students' future careers, suggesting that technology is still furthering education, rather than harming it. Ultimately, technology has provided Gen Alphas with the ability to educate themselves, create global connections, and advocate for what they believe in. This ability may prove advantageous for Gen Alpha to accelerate their agenda and make an impact on the world from a young age.
Does more diversity lead to more disparities?
As a considerable amount of Gen Alpha was born between two economic crises, the Great Recession of 2007-2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the demographic group has experienced higher rates of poverty than previous generations. As of 2021, nearly one in five Gen Alpha kids were living in poverty, while nearly two in five were living in low-income households.
