Threads wove its way into the social media tapestry when it was released in the summer of 2023. The platform’s headline-generating launch was well-received, with users signing up in their millions. But now that the dust has settled, just how much of an effect has Threads had in the evolving world of social media?
As of 2025, Threads still holds a significant record. The mobile app reached 150 million downloads in just six days. For comparison, Pokémon Go and Call of Duty: Mobile took 33 days and 106 days to reach this number of downloads, respectively. As expected, after this initial surge in downloads, things calmed down. In March 2025, Threads experienced a steadier 18 million downloads.
An average of 34 minutes was spent on the app every month globally as of August 2024. Additionally, the average Threads user opened their app around 20 times every month.
As of February 2025, over 57 percent of Meta's Threads users were men, indicating a slightly irregular gender imbalance, as most social media platforms have a relatively equal gender split. Almost 29 percent of Threads users were aged between 25 and 34 years, making this the largest age group, while 20.36 percent of users were between the ages of 18 and 24 years.
Frequent users of Threads were not as likely as their Bluesky counterparts to be as optimistic about artificial intelligence (AI). Approximately 51 percent of Threads users stated that AI would have at least a somewhat positive impact on their quality of life, compared to 62 percent of Bluesky users.
Threads has a long way to go to catch up to the big players on the social media landscape, regardless of a record-breaking start and quarter-on-quarter increases in user numbers. Being the baby of the Meta Family of Apps was unquestionably a strong head start for the platform.
A record-breaking start for Threads
Thanks to Meta Platforms’ global status, there was much media buzz surrounding Threads’ announcement. Just seven hours after its release, the number of Threads sign-ups hit 10 million; within five days, the app had around 100 million users.As of 2025, Threads still holds a significant record. Monthly active user numbers are still rising
Threads audience numbers are increasing gradually. As of the fourth quarter of 2024, Threads had approximately 275 million monthly active users (MAU), up from 200 million MAU in the third quarter of 2024.
