No one set out to build a platform used by nearly half the world, yet that is precisely what Facebook has become. With 3.07 billion monthly active users, it sits at the top of the global social media order by a margin that no rival has come close to closing. Founded in 2004 and now the centerpiece of Meta Platforms, Facebook has grown into one of the most widely used online services ever created.
The platform鈥檚 reach is anything but uniform. India alone accounted for over 403 million Facebook users worldwide, a figure larger than the entire population of most countries, while the United States, Indonesia, and Brazil each had more than 100 million. The core audience skewed male and young: men aged 25 to 34 represented the single largest Facebook audience by age, accounting for 18.9 percent of the total global user base. Facebook鈥檚 appeal, however, stretched well beyond that demographic, with meaningful user bases across every age group in both developed and emerging markets.
Scale translates directly into commercial power. Meta鈥檚 advertising revenue worldwide reached over 196 billion U.S. dollars in 2025, a 22.1 percent jump from the prior year and a figure that cemented Meta鈥檚 position among the largest digital advertising operations ever built. Facebook remained the primary driver, and the platform鈥檚 pull over the marketing industry was clear: in a 2026 survey, 36 percent of marketers worldwide named Facebook the most important social media platform for their work, ahead of Instagram and LinkedIn. Across Meta鈥檚 full family of apps, including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, 3.56 billion people were counted among Meta daily active users as of the first quarter of 2026.
Facebook鈥檚 year-on-year audience grew 2.3 percent in 2026, a modest pace relative to social media platform growth rates posted by TikTok at 20 percent or Pinterest at 67 percent. The more pressing challenge, though, was platform integrity: in the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, Facebook took action on 1.1 billion fake accounts worldwide. It is that combination of scale, advertising dominance, and ongoing enforcement responsibility that shapes what Facebook represents as a global platform today.
