User agent: any software sending automatic requests to websites. Includes browsers and bots commanded by users, typically for indexing or data-mining. Each 'user-agent header' identifies itself to the website with a 'string' of metadata that is monitored by the website's servers.
Bot: any type of user agent not directly instructed by a human to access that website, therefore operating independently. Includes AI user agents and crawlers that extract information from a website by responding to human prompts on an AI application.
Crawler: bots that visit websites in the background to collect data. Used by search engines for indexing and data mining for research and analysis, and more recently employed to collect content for training large language models (LLMs). They function independently as well, navigating links to find and retrieve material on a large scale.
