In the second round of the Argentine presidential elections on November 19, 2023, Javier Milei, candidate of La Libertad Avanza (LLA), achieved a decisive victory over his main contender Sergio Massa, from Unión por la Patria. According to official data, Milei obtained approximately 56 percent of the counted votes, becoming the next president of Argentina starting December 10 of that year. Meanwhile, Sergio Massa acknowledged his defeat in a speech in which he also hinted at saying goodbye to his role in Argentine politics. It is worth noting that these results surprised the Government, which failed to capitalize on the victory obtained in the general elections last October.

The keys to the victory

The high levels of inflation throughout 2023, the poor public opinion of the government’s image, as well as the explicit support of former president Mauricio Macri were some of the keys to understanding the electoral victory and the rise to the executive branch of a new political party like La Libertad Avanza.

What will the ministerial composition of Milei’s Argentina be like?

During the campaign and in the presidential debate, the economist and president-elect of Argentina proposed a reform of the country’s ministerial structure. This involves reducing 18 ministries to 8, which are: Defense, Economy, Justice, Foreign Affairs, Infrastructure, Interior, Security, and Human Capital. Although there is no confirmation yet on who will occupy each portfolio, some of the politicians and economists mentioned to hold leadership roles in Milei’s Government are: Carlos Rodríguez and Emilio Ocampo, from the LLA Economic Advisory Council, the Macri-affiliated deputy Cristian Ritondo, and the economist Federico Sturzennegger.
