Javier Milei won with a remarkable lead over his main rivals Sergio Massa (Union for the Homeland) and Patricia Bullrich (Together for Change) in the latest primary elections held on August 13, 2023. According to official data provided after the counting of 97.4 percent of the polling stations, the leader of La Libertad Avanza received 30 percent support — almost double that of Patricia Bullrich and nine points ahead of Sergio Massa.

Scenario ahead of the general elections

Besides being a surprise, since the voting intention polls predicted a quite different scenario, these results represent a severe blow to the expectations of the UP and JxC leaders ahead of the national elections on October 22. In fact, according to the most recent surveys, Javier Milei would even surpass the percentage of votes obtained in August.

A shift to the right

This turn towards the far right is neither sudden nor, much less, a surprise, as less than 20 percent of the Argentine population is satisfied with the management during the last four years of the Kirchnerist president Alberto Fernandez. In this regard, economic policies have been the most criticized, largely due to the galloping increase in inflation.
