Generative AI is rapidly transforming newsrooms worldwide, with 87 percent of news publishers reporting their operations are being fully or somewhat impacted by these technologies. This widespread adoption highlights AI's growing influence in journalism, though concerns persist about its effects on content quality and job security.
Potential uses and perceptions of AI in newsrooms
Text creation is the area with the greatest potential for AI assistance in newsrooms, according to 63 percent of executives surveyed. Over half of respondents are already actively using AI for text creation, while more than 40 percent employ it for text correction. However, opinions on AI's role are mixed, with 50 percent viewing it as primarily supportive, eight percent seeing it as a quality improvement tool, and 39 percent envisioning both functions.
Challenges and industry adaptations
The primary concern among newsroom leaders regarding AI use is the potential for inaccurate information and reduced content quality, with 85 percent expressing this worry. Indeed, with AI-written news also a concern among consumers, publishers must be cautious when exploring AI for this purpose to avoid alienating readers and ensure their audiences still receive the quality and fact-based content they seek from their preferred publication.
