Car buyers in the United States - statistics & facts
The automotive market in the United States has just become even more complex for car buyers. The Trump Administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act promises U.S. consumers tax deductions on new car loans through 2028, provided the vehicle purchased has undergone final assembly in the United States. However, various factors are at play when considering whether this tax deduction will sway shoppers toward a new car purchase. Around a quarter of the U.S. online residential population was planning to buy a new car in the 12 months following a June 2025 survey, while another 18 percent reported a clear preference for used cars. The current political climate also led consumers across age groups consider delaying their purchase decision until impact of tariffs on vehicle prices became clearer. In a country with more cars on the road than licensed drivers, it is important for brands to maintain consumer interest, even more so with the challenges arising from these new policies.
