E-scooters in the United States - statistics & facts
Electric kick-scooters have become a fixture on U.S. city streets in the last few years, including privately owned as well as shared e-scooters. In 2024, 130 cities across the U.S. were served by e-scooter sharing schemes and around eight percent of U.S. Americans said they had a private e-scooter available in their household. The micromobility devices are legal across the U.S. and are federally limited to a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour but local and state laws may restrict their use further. For instance, California requires a valid driver’s or learner’s license for electric kick-scooter riders and limits their speed to 15 miles per hour.
