According to a survey conducted in June 2020 in Japan, around ** percent of respondents stated to have increased purchases made over general online retail sites and applications such as Amazon and Rakuten during the self-restraint period of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This represented the online channel with the highest increase in purchase frequency.
While an explicit lockdown was not enforced on a national level in Japan, businesses were asked to reduce business hours or close down voluntarily. Additionally, citizens were asked to practice self-restraint and refrain from going out unnecessarily, driving the popularity of online retail channels.
