A country code top-level domain (ccTLD) is a top-level domain referring to a country, a sovereign state, or a territory which is given a country code. All two-letter top-level domains are ccTLDs, and all ccTLD identifiers consist of two letters.
.tk is the ccTLD for Tokelau, a territory of New Zealand that has a population of approximately 1,400. The tremendous popularity of .tk is due to the fact that there are no residency requirements to register a .tk domain name, and .tk domain names are offered for free (for the first year) with minimal restrictions.

Citation formats

As of September, China’s .cn reigned as the world’s most popular country code top-level domain (ccTLD), with around 36.1 million registrations. Close behind, Germany’s .de secured second place with nearly 27.9 million domains, while the island territory of Tokelau ranked third with 27.5 million registered domains. Overall, country code domains remained a powerful presence online, with more than 324 million registrations to these types of of domains worldwide during the period.
