This statistic was compiled by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ using various sources. Figures for 2021 through 2024 were drawn from the Federal Reserve's annual Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking (SHED), conducted each year in the fall with a nationally representative sample of approximately 10,000 or more adults. The 2025 figure was sourced from PYMNTS Intelligence's The Pay Later Ecosystem Report, based on a survey of 2,743 respondents fielded in December 2025. Due to differences in survey methodology, sample size, and fieldwork timing, figures across the two sources may not be directly comparable.

The share of U.S. adults using buy now, pay later services grew steadily between 2021 and 2024, rising from ** percent to ** percent by 2024. Monthly tracking data from 2025 shows usage plateauing in this range, fluctuating between **** percent in September 2025 and **** percent in April 2025, with December 2025 coming in at **** percent. In terms of demographics, BNPL use was more prevalent among low- and middle-income adults, and notably higher among Black and Hispanic consumers compared to other racial groups.
