Late fee metrics for BNPL lenders in the U.S. 2019-2023
Among the four BNPL lenders in the CFPB sample that charged late fees, both the incidence and value of late fees declined consistently between 2019 and 2023. The share of loans assessed a late fee fell from percent in 2019 to *** percent in 2023, with a temporary spike to *** percent in 2021. Late fees collected as a share of gross merchandise volume also fell steadily, from **** percent in 2019 to **** percent in 2023. The average dollar amount per late fee assessed dropped from to **** U.S. dollars over the same period, while the average amount actually collected per late fee fell more modestly, from **** to **** U.S. dollars.
