Italy’s banking landscape is defined by a high number of institutions and a strong tradition of regional and cooperative banking. In 2025, Italy stood out with a relatively high number of banks compared to other European countries. In fact, in early 2025, only Germany and Poland had more banks than Italy - a reflection of the country’s deeply rooted preference for local financial institutions. Lombardy, in particular, recorded the highest concentration of banks in the country.
