The return on equity (ROE) of the Italian banking industry increased overall between 2016 and 2025, despite periodic drops. The lowest value was recorded in the last quarter of 2016, when the ROE stood at negative **** percent. Italian banks recovered fast from that by reaching an ROE of *** percent in the next quarter. Another sharp decrease took place in the first half of 2020, primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ROE reached **** percent in the third quarter of 2025.
