Greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU-27) decreased across a number of sectors between 1990 and 2023. The biggest reduction was in the public electricity and heat production sector, where emissions fell by roughly *** million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e). This reduction is attributable to an increase in renewable energy, and a move away from coal consumption. In comparison, road transport emissions were some *** MtCO₂e higher in 2023, relative to 1990.
