At the United Nations conference of the parties (COP) in 2009, the developed countries of the UN pledged to fund climate investments in the developing world worth 100 billion U.S. dollars per year for the period from 2010 to 2020. At COP-21 in 2015, these countries reiterated their commitment for the years from 2020 to 2025. The European Union's collective contribution towards this goal grew over the period from 2014 to 2021, increasing from approximately 13 billion Euros in 2014 to over 23 billion in 2021. During this time, the European Commission, the EU's highest bureaucratic institutions, increased its contribution sharply, increasing from 680 million Euros in 2014 to 2.5 billion in 2021, while the member states of the EU increased their contribution from 10 billion Euros to almost 18 billion over the same period.
