Wind energy in Europe - statistics & facts
The wind energy industry in Europe dates back almost forty years, with the continent's first wind farm opening in 1982 on the Greek island of Kythnos. It had five turbines with a capacity of 20 kilowatts each. Almost 10 years later the world’s first offshore wind farm was erected off the coast of Denmark. The industry has come a long way since then. The total wind power capacity in Europe has seen steady growth over the past years, reaching more than 268 gigawatts in 2024.
