Cross-border e-commerce in North America - statistics and facts
North America presents an interesting case in cross-border e-commerce. The region that consists of Canada, the United States, and Mexico has long been characterized by internal borderless trade and commerce. However, recent developments created space for an outside player to enter the North American market: China. 2023 was the first year in which Mexican consumers bought more goods from China than from their neighbors to the North. In the United States, more than half of foreign e-commerce orders are placed on Chinese websites. The recent cost-of-living crisis has increased demand for affordable goods, contributing to the massive growth of Chinese e-commerce players such as SHEIN and Temu, which can offer products at lower prices than their North American competitors.
