Cable TV in the United States - statistics & facts
Cable TV has been a staple in American homes for decades and continued to hold its ground. However the growing competition presented by online services is slowly pushing it aside. While cable subscriptions remain a convenient entertainment option, the main driver behind paying for cable is live sports. The sector is seeing significant annual declines in viewing time which is putting cable TV future at risk.
Pay TV subscriber decline rate tends to hover around seven percent each quarter, leaving the future of cable TV uncertain both in terms of attracting new subscribers as well as hanging on to existing ones. Sports might be cable TVs saving grace, however more and more streaming services are taking over that arena as well.
Competition from streaming is growing
The U.S. cable television is facing increasing competition from video streaming services. Building a subscriber base in the future will be difficult, given that younger consumers are the  least interested in cable and satellite TV subscriptions and are unlikely to leave an on-demand service in favor of a more traditional medium. The industry is dominated by a handful of large companies. The latest merger and acquisition moves in the industry are putting Charter and Cox at the top, with more than 14 million subscribers. The company will be called Cox Communications and is expected to become operational by mid-2026. Comcast is the second-largest pay TV provider in the United States (dethroned by the Cox and charted deal), followed by DirecTV. In order to diversify their product offerings and stay competitive in the industry, many of these companies have begun to bundle internet and phone service options into their offerings. When it comes to individual channels, The Fox News Channel dominates in both the primetime slot and total viewers. The news channel averaged around 2.4 million viewers in 2024, more than a million ahead of one of its closest news competitors, MSNBC.
