Major video games are often developed for several platforms simultaneously, but some platforms are more common than others. A 2026 survey found that ** percent of game developers stated that their current game project was for PC, far ahead of all other platforms. The current-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S ranked next, with ** percent and ** percent of developers working on game projects for these platforms, respectively.
PC gaming remains at the top
There are several reasons for the surge in PC game development. The rising popularity of Valve’s Steam Deck was cited as a factor, and the growth of the independent (indie) gaming sector should also not be discounted. In 2024, indie games accounted for **** percent of video game releases on the digital PC game store Steam. For indie game developers, the technical hurdles to develop PC games are lower than for other platforms such as console or mobile. Additionally, monetizing games on mobile devices is very difficult and most game developers prefer premium games as their monetization model, which works best with single-purchase game releases.
AR and VR gaming is growing
When looking at augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) game development, most of AR/VR game developers stated that they were most interested in the Meta Quest and Horizon Store, as the Meta Quest, formerly known as the Oculus Quest, is one of the most established platforms in VR. While the competing Apple Vision Pro headset with the Apple visionOS was only released in February 2024, the platform already ranked third in terms of developer interest.
