Germany faces federal elections to the Bundestag, the lower house of Parliament, on Sunday, February 23, following the breakup of the coalition of Social Democrats (SPD), Liberals (FDP), and Greens (Die Grünen/Bündnis 90) that had been leading the country since 2021.
The latest polls conducted between February 17 and 21 confirm two trends already seen in previous surveys: the defeat of the current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, on one hand, and the stellar rise of the far-right led by Alternative for Germany (AfD).
Although the conservatives of the CDU, led by the Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, would obtain the highest percentage of support, they would fall quite short of the 316 seats in parliament needed to govern alone, so possible coalitions are already being considered, among which the classic Große Koalition (GroKo) between Germany’s two largest parties (SPD and CDU/CSU) and the Schwarz-Grün Koalition (The Greens and CDU/CSU) stand out.
