Citation formats

The confirmation of Yolanda Díaz's candidacy and her Sumar proposal for the national elections, to be held in July 2023, adds another twist to the already complicated political landscape of Spain. Yolanda Díaz's separation from Unidas Podemos represents a severe setback for the purple party—a formation in which internal division was already more than evident—and has led to the signing of an agreement to run together in the general elections.

The return of the two-party system

For now, all polls show the Popular Party (PP) as the winner both in seat distribution and votes, although without an absolute majority. This positive advance of the right-wing party is not so much caused by the loss of voters by the PSOE, which records similar or slightly lower results than in 2019, but rather by a significant increase in PP supporters.

Regional management, essential for the general results

This is largely due, on the one hand, to the renewed confidence of the electorate in the blue group following Pablo Casado's resignation and, on the other hand, to the good ratings achieved by regional presidents such as Juanma Moreno (Andalusia), Alfonso Rueda (Galicia), or the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
