As of January 2026, approximately 34.5 percent of people in Sweden intended to vote for the Social Democrats in a potential election, compared with 21.6 percent who would vote for Sweden Democrats. In September 2022, the population of Sweden elected a new parliament, four years after the previous election. In the election, the Social Democratic Party became the largest party in terms of share of votes, but the center-right block formed a government afterwards.

High voter turnout

In the parliamentary election in 2022, as many as 84 percent of the eligible voters in Sweden casted their vote. This was one of the highest turnouts throughout the world in recent years.

High share of women - but not above 50 percent

Sweden is often seen as a country with a high level of gender equality, and this is the case for share of women in the Parliament. In 2022, 46 percent of the parliamentarians were female. However, the country has yet to beat the 50 percent mark. The same year, 45 percent of the candidates for the election were women.
