New York was the most populous of the Thirteen Colonies' middle colonies in the 17^th century, before it was overtaken by Pennsylvania in the early 18^th century. New York also had the largest Black population in the middle colonies throughout the colonial era - the majority of these people lived in slavery, however, at just 14 percent of the total population, Blacks made up a much smaller share of the total population in New England and the middle colonies than they did in the southern colonies.
