The Women's Discus Throw has been a permanent fixture at the Summer Olympics since it was first introduced in 1928. Since 1928, athletes from the Soviet Union have had the most success, winning four golds and ten total medals between 1952 and 1980. The Soviet Union's Nina Romashkova is the event's most successful competitor, with two golds and one bronze medal to her name. Three medals (two silver and one bronze) won in this event have been retroactively stripped from athletes representing Belarus, Cuba and Russia; coincidentally, Cuban athlete Yarelys Barrios, who was stripped of her 2008 silver medal for doping offences, only won the 2012 bronze medal after Russian athlete Darya Pishchalnikova was stripped of her silver medal, also for doping offenses.
