Rising wealth and income inequality has been a common trend across all regions of the globe in the 21st century, with many countries in Europe being particularly affected. Since the 1980s, European economies have become more exposed to the effects of economic globalization, the growth of international financial markets, the imbalances in education and the rise technical skills in the labor market. These shifts have largely benefited top earners, leading to a growing concentration of income and wealth at the top. This trend has become more contentious since the global financial crisis and great recession (2007-2010), as the mixture of stagnant economies and growing inequality have left many Europeans with declining incomes.
