In 2025, HDFC Bank emerged as India’s most valuable brand, with a brand value of around 45 billion U.S. dollars, closely followed by Tata Consultancy Services, which had held the top spot for two consecutive years. Telecommunications company Airtel secured the third position, with a brand value of about 41 billion dollars. India’s top 10 brands in 2025 were largely dominated by companies from the technology, banking, and telecommunications sectors. 

HDFC Bank Limited

The Housing Development Finance Corporation’s banking arm, HDFC Bank Ltd, headquartered in Mumbai, was one of the largest private sector lenders in India as of May 2025. Set up in 1994, its first office was inaugurated by former Prime Minister and then Union Finance Minister Manmohan Singh. With branches across the country and abroad, HDFC Bank has grown into one of India’s leading private sector banks. 

Private sector banks in India

  All major Indian banks were nationalized by the government in 1969. However, with a change in government policy in the 1990s that made way for globalization and increasing foreign investment, the private sector was split by regulators into old and new banks. The very first bank in this sector, founded in 1899, was Nendungadi Bank in Calicut or Kozhikode, Kerala.
Since 2014, as part of the central government’s inclusion program to expand affordable access to financial services, private sector banks have enrolled over fourteen million recipients under the scheme as of August 2023. ICICI Bank accounts for the largest share at over four million recipients.
