The first round of the presidential election saw Emmanuel Macron (La République en marche) and Marine Le Pen (Rassemblement national) leading the polls. Across all votes cast, 27.6 percent were in favor of the centrist right candidate Emmanuel Macron. The far-right candidate, Marine Le Pen, had received 23.41 percent of the votes. For the second consecutive presidential election, no left-wing party will be present in the second round.

The disappearance of historical parties

This election was marked by the very weak results of the historical parties PS and Les Républicains. Anne Hidalgo's party received 1.74 percent of the votes and Valérie Pécresse only 4.79 percent. This result was insufficient to qualify for reimbursement of campaign expenses. The fall was especially severe for the LR candidate, who was credited with 17 percent voting intention in mid-December 2021.
The Socialist Party fell heavily again for the second consecutive time in the presidential election. The party, then represented by Benoît Hamon, had won 6.36 percent of the votes in the first round of the 2017 presidential election.

The stakes of the 2022 presidential campaign

Purchasing power was one of the main themes of the presidential campaign. During his only campaign rally of the first round, the president-candidate focused his speech on the decline of the purchasing power of the French, heavily impacted by the war in Ukraine. This theme was also strongly echoed by candidates from other parties.
The ecological challenge, a concern widely shared at the heart of the French population, did not succeed in benefiting the Green candidate, ecologist Yannick Jadot, who collected less than 5 percent of the votes. It was the candidate of La France Insoumise who led the ecological left with nearly 22 percent of the votes received.
