This chart shows a compilation of several polls on the voting intentions of the French for the 2024 European elections in France between May 2023 and May 2024. According to a poll conducted at the end of May 2024, the voting intentions of the French were mainly directed towards the list of the presidential majority party, the list of the Socialist Party (PS), as well as that of the National Rally (RN).

The European elections in France

The next European elections will take place between June 6 and June 9, 2024. These elections occur every five years in each of the European Union countries and allow for the election of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who will represent the citizens' interests in the European Parliament. In France, these elections engage the population little. In 2019, nearly 70 percent of 18-25 year olds declared little or no interest in these elections.

The French are among the Europeans with one of the most negative perceptions of the European Parliament. In 2023, only 22 percent of the French had a positive opinion of the European Parliament, compared to 64 percent for Irish citizens, for example.

France in the European Parliament

For the 2019–2024 term, it was the National Rally list that had the most seats for France in the European Parliament (22 in total). France currently has 79 seats in the European Parliament and will have 81 starting from the 2024 elections. Each country has a number of deputies proportional to its demographic weight in the Union, and the deputies do not sit by country but are distributed among seven European political parties. The National Rally is represented by the European party Identity and Democracy, and 21 French deputies from the coalition of centrist parties, including that of the presidential majority, sit within the European party Renew Europe.

European parliamentarians do not have the power of initiative or execution, these powers being reserved for the European Commission. However, their competencies are threefold: legislative, budgetary, and supervisory. Parliamentarians vote on legislative texts proposed by the European Commission, define the annual budget of the Union, and exercise a supervisory function over other European institutions.
