According to an opinion survey conducted in Peru in March 2024, nearly 60 percent of the respondents stated that the increase in prices of the basic family basket and the lack of jobs are the main economic problems in the country. Among the non-financial problems that most affect the Peruvian population are corruption and public insecurity due to the rise in crime. The lack of solutions and the political collapse in the country generated some of the social uprisings in America with the greatest impact in recent years.
Unemployment and low wages
Peru ranks near the bottom in the ranking of Latin American countries by monthly minimum wage with 270 U.S. dollars per month. However, most of the countries bordering the Andean country surpass it with higher wages, such as Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia. In the case of the unemployment rate in the region, the average for Latin America and the Caribbean is 6.4 percent, while Peru records 5.4 percent and ranks as the third South American country with the lowest unemployment level. However, the percentage of the population below the poverty line still exceeds 25 percent.
Crime problems
Between July and December 2023, approximately 12 out of every 100 inhabitants of Peru suffered some theft of wallet, cellphone, or money. This was the most common type of criminal act during that period. The crime problem in the Andean country does not end with the incidence rate. There is also a trust issue among residents who suffered a crime against themselves. Approximately 41 percent of crime victims did not report the illicit act because they considered it a waste of time.
