According to the CDC, "uterine fibroids are the most common noncancerous tumors in women of reproductive age. Fibroids are made of muscle cells and other tissues that grow in and around the wall of the uterus, or womb. The cause of fibroids is unknown. Risk factors include being African American or being overweight. The symptoms of fibroids include: Heavy or painful periods or bleeding between periods. Feeling "full" in the lower abdomen. Urinating often. Pain during sex. Lower back pain. Infertility. Multiple miscarriages. But some women will have no symptoms."

Citation formats

Among women who have been diagnosed with uterine fibroids, less than one in five were offered less-invasive treatment options such as over-the-counter drugs, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), or oral contraceptives. Instead, the majority were presented with a hysterectomy, the complete surgical removal of the uterus, often unnecessary, or at least a last option. In fact, nearly half of respondents have never heard of UFE, despite it being a well-established procedure.
