A survey from 2024 found that over three-quarters of U.S. adults "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that menstrual supplies like pads and tampons should be freely available in restrooms of public schools and universities. The share of adults supporting free period products varied slightly by select characteristics, but still, the majority were supportive.
Nevertheless, as of January 2025, only 27 states in the United States (and Washington D.C.) had passed legislation to provide free access to period products in schools. These bills varied widely, with some states providing funding for period supplies to schools, while others simply mandate all schools provide free period products with no funding to back this up.
