* Kosovo is administered under UN Security Council Resolution 1244/99. It is recognized by 22 EU member states, but not by Spain, Greece, Romania, Cyprus, and Slovakia. Its status as an independent country is contested by Serbia.Â
Kosovo is a potential future candidate but has not begun the process of negotiations with the EU.
Negotiations between the EU and Turkey have been suspended since 2021, after a decision by the European Parliament, due to issues with human rights protections and the rule of law.Â
As of 2024, the inflation rate in Turkey stood at ** percent, the highest among all EU candidate countries. Inflation was around **** percent in Moldova, Ukraine, and Serbia.Â
The convergence of economic conditions towards that of the rest of the European Union is an important part of the Copenhagen Criteria - the political, economic, and institutional conditions which must be satisfied for a country to enter the European Union. Fulfilling the economic criteria for entry into the EU is supposed to guarantee that a new member state has a functioning market economy which can handle the economic pressures of competition in the European Single Market.Â
