Citation formats

As of 2024, 54 percent of respondents in European Union member states favor the future enlargement of the EU, with 40 percent against. This share fluctuated across the EU, with 75 percent of Spaniards, 71 percent of Lithuanians, and 68 percent of Poles being in favor of enlargement, while only 35 percent of Austrians were in favor. Strikingly, the EU's two largest economic and political powers, France and Germany, both had majorities saying they were not in favor of admitting new countries as members of the union, with 54 percent and 51 percent against respectively. Currently, nine countries obtained candidate status, while Kosovo remains a potential candidate.
