Serbia - statistics & facts
Serbia is a landlocked country in the Balkans, with its capital, Belgrade, being the largest city and economic hub. The country had approximately 6.58 million inhabitants as of 2024; however, the population has been following a declining trend. Reasons behind the decrease include low fertility rates and moderate life expectancy. Even though, fertility rates peaked in 2023 at 1.61, this figure was still below the necessary replacement rate of 2.1 live births per woman. Furthermore, around 22 percent of the population is over 65 years old, which may present a serious challenge for the country and its economy in the coming years.
