The leading candidates running for Brazil's Presidency in the 2022 elections have invested over ** million Brazilian reals to produce political ads for TV and radio between August and September 2022. Former Presidente Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva reported so far the highest investment on television and radio advertising, nearly ** million reals. Current Presidente Jair Bolsonaro spent around *** million reals. Both candidates lead opinion polls, with higher voting intentions among Brazilians.
During the political campaign in Brazil, candidates and political parties are entitled by law to promote their candidatures on television and radio for free and using public funds – TV and radio stations get compensated by tax relief for giving up time for free advertising. Using candidates’ private resources to buy extra spots on the referred media is not allowed.
