According to a survey conducted in October 2021 in Japan, around one in five respondents would not buy food products discounted due to short best before dates. While the majority was willing to buy discounted products, bread was the most common choice, with more than ** percent.
Food products in Japan are labeled with two types of expiration dates: best before and use-by dates. While food products are considered safe to be consumed past their best before dates if no changes in color and taste are observed, items past the use-by date are considered unsuitable for consumption.
