When inflation spikes or unemployment shifts, the ripple effects reach everything from grocery prices to interest rates. Economic indicators are the tools that help make sense of these shifts, offering a snapshot of the global economy's health at any given moment. In 2025, real GDP growth worldwide held steady at around three percent, reflecting a global economy navigating trade tensions and uneven regional performance. Generally, economic indicators are divided into three categories: leading indicators, lagging indicators, and coincident indicators.
Leading indicators signal future changes and are useful for making short-term predictions. Share price indexes in major economies are a common example of leading indicators. Usually stock market returns will start to decline before an economy slips into recession, and vice versa. Another widely watched leading indicator is consumer confidence, which hovered just below the 50-point mark through much of 2025 before edging up at the start of 2026. Unemployment is the classic example of a lagging indicator. Movements in unemployment figures usually occur after the underlying economic conditions have begun to change, meaning that the unemployment rates could decrease several quarters after an economy has rebounded from a recession.
Wages are often provided as an example of a coincident indicator. If the economy is strong and business is going well, personal income rates will increase at about the same time. However, the line between coincident and other indicators is sometimes blurred. GDP is considered by many to be a coincident indicator, not a lagging indicator, on the basis that it can be used to estimate current levels of economic activity. Others question this, pointing out that current GDP figures are estimates that are revised at some point in the future, which makes them much less accurate than values calculated for past time periods.
Changes in consumer prices are also often considered to be a lagging indicator. By their nature, lagging indicators cannot be used directly to predict economic changes; their use is in confirming specific patterns after the economic trend occurred (which can then serve as the basis for further predictions). However, an economic recession may follow a period of high inflation rates as people spend less to save money. 2022 and 2023 saw a surge in consumer prices all over the world after the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Â Average inflation rates worldwide have been trending downward since their post-pandemic peaks but remained above pre-2020 levels in 2025.
°Õ³ó±ðÌýmerchandise export index is another important economic indicator as it measures the level of trade in the world. Furthermore, government bond yields are considered to be a useful indication of investors' confidence about countries' economies. Finally, the gross government debt as share of GDP can provide insights into the development of the public finances of advanced and emerging economies. Taken together, these indicators paint a picture of an economy still adjusting: inflation is cooling but has not fully normalized, labor markets remain resilient, and rising sovereign debt levels in both advanced and developing nations continue to constrain fiscal policy options. Furthermore, the long-term economic effects of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran have still not taken full effect.
