The United States withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) - statistics & facts

On January 20, 2025, Donald Trump began his term as the 47th president of the United States by signing a flurry of executive orders. One such order announced the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). This was not the first time Trump tried to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO. Towards the end of his first term as President in 2020, he sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations stating his intention to leave the organization. Soon after, Joe Biden was elected President and informed the Secretary-General the U.S. would remain a WHO member. However, following the notification issued in 2025, the U.S. moved forward with the withdrawal. As of January 2026, funding has been officially terminated, personnel recalled, and engagements with the organization suspended.
