Card payments developed as a ratio to the overall GDP of the European Union from 2013 to 2020. The importance of card payments relative to the size of the economy of the EU increased over time. In 2019, the total value of card transactions as a share of GDP was approximately 21.1 percent. Card transactions have become a vital part of payment methods in the European Union.
