In 2024, nearly 17 percent of physicians in the U.S. were under the age of 40 years. There were large variations between the specialties, with psychiatrists being generally older than physicians in emergency medicine.
Having such high shares of doctors over the age of 40 years means the U.S. will face large numbers of doctors retiring soon, without enough replacement. The UK, for example, has a much better age distribution, with nearly half of their doctors under the age of 40.
