According to a survey of six major U.S. BNPL lenders - Affirm, Cash App Afterpay, Klarna, PayPal, Sezzle, and Zip - loan originations grew rapidly between 2019 and 2021, before settling into a more moderate pace. The number of loans continued to rise in 2022 and 2023, reaching over *** million by 2023. The average loan size, however, dropped notably in 2022 and remained below the *** U.S. dollars recorded in 2021, edging back up only slightly to *** U.S. dollars in 2023.
