The Norwegian Parliament (Stortinget) is elected every four years. There are 169 seats in the Norwegian Parliament, distributed in accordance with a method known as proportional representation. The system guarantees that political parties gain seats in the Norwegian Parliament in proportion to the number of votes cast for them throughout the country.

The share of votes won by the Labour Party in Norway fell every election since 2009. Despite this, they were able to form a minority coalition government together with a strongly improved Centre Party after the election in 2021, seeking majorities in the parliament with the Socialist Left Party. Moreover, whereas the Red Party crossed the electoral threshold of **** percent for the first time in its history, the Christian Party fell below it for the first time since 1945.
