The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has verified more than 30,010 civilian victims in the country: 12,605 killed and 29,178 injured since the beginning of the Russian military attack on Ukraine in February 2022, up to January 2025. However, the OHCHR specified that the actual numbers could be higher.

The Russian Army Attack

On February 24, 2022, Vladimir Putin announced the launch of a "special military operation." Quickly, the first bombings on major Ukrainian cities were launched and Russian troops invaded the country. The opposing forces were largely in favor of the Russian giant, equipped with an air force nearly ten times larger and much more powerful artillery.
In recent years, the Russian military budget has significantly increased, rising from 30 billion in 2004 to 80 billion U.S. dollars in 2016. Russia is also a leading military power as it was the fourth country in military spending in 2020, behind India, China, and the United States. However, during this attack, numerous military losses have been reported for the Russian army, with more than 2,700 aircraft reportedly destroyed or captured as of April 12.

The Consequences of the Conflict in Europe

Since Ukraine is not a member of NATO, no military measures were taken against Russia. However, to destabilize the invader, a series of measures was taken by the international community. Economic sanctions quickly had effects on the Russian economy. The ruble exchange rate collapsed in March 2022, reaching a historically low level.
This conflict and these sanctions will also have repercussions on the European economy, which largely depends on Russian hydrocarbons transported via pipeline and gas pipeline, notably transiting through Ukraine. The war has also caused a wave of immigration of the Ukrainian population seeking refuge in European countries, mainly Poland, to escape the conflict.
