Number of civilian casualties during the war in Ukraine 2022-2026
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has verified 65,044 civilian casualties since Russia's invasion of Ukraine as of the end of June 2026. Of them, 48,613 people were reported to have been injured, with 16,431 killed. OHCHR has specified that the real numbers could be higher.Â
Initial months of the war the deadliest
Since the start of the war on February 24, 2022, the month with the highest death toll was March 2022, when 4,313 civilians were killed and 3,019 were injured. As the invasion stalled, fewer casualties were incurred, although 842 civilians lost their lives in April and a further 589 in May. Four years into the war, the toll on civilian lives is still high, however, with 238 civilian fatalities reported in April 2026.Â
Preventing missile and drone strikes
Although Ukraine was able to push the frontlines away from major urban areas, the main threat to civilians has evolved, coming mainly from long-range attacks. Although a high proportion of drone strikes are intercepted, missile strikes, especially ballistic ones, have proven far harder to stop. Nevertheless, Ukraine's expertise in drone countermeasures has proven a valuable export, with the country able to sign defense deals with various Gulf states since the start of the Iran War in 2026.
