Information on victims of the occupation and conflict is regularly collected by OCHA field staff and entered into OCHA's civilian protection database after review and verification. As a general rule, for an incident to be recorded in the database, it must be validated by at least two independent and reliable sources.

Number of Palestinians and Israelis killed in confrontations 2008-2022
This chart represents the number of Palestinians and Israelis who were killed between 2008 and 2022 in the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT) and in Israel in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Due to the lack of verified information on the attacks of October 7, 2023, the source has chosen not to specify the figures concerning conflicts since October 2023 pending more reliable independent verification. For figures regarding the years 2023 and 2024, we invite you to consult the following statistics on the Israel / Hamas war.
Violence reached a particularly high level in 2014 when Israel conducted the "Protective Edge" operation in Gaza, in response to the kidnapping and murder of three teenagers. The military operation lasted seven weeks and caused more than 2,300 deaths, almost all of whom were Gazans.
Review of conflicts between the Israeli army and Hamas since 2008
Since 2007, when Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by the European Union, took control of Gaza (a Palestinian territory), conflicts have multiplied in this territory between Hamas and the Israeli army. There were three wars in 2008-2009, 2012, and 2014 until the events of October 2023.
In 2021, the conflict intensified again: with 350 deaths on the Palestinian side, the level of violence had never been so high since 2014. Tensions escalated following the eviction order of Palestinian families living in Jerusalem neighborhoods, issued by Israel in May 2021 after it annexed this part of the territory. In June 2021, a ceasefire was established, but conflicts continued.
After several years, the conflict sharply escalated in 2023 during attacks near the Gaza Strip, raising fears of a large-scale war in the region and numerous casualties on both sides.
Why have there been more deaths on the Palestinian side than on the Israeli side since 2008?
One element of the answer lies in the "Iron Dome" system developed by Israel to intercept all rockets launched by Hamas from Gaza toward Israeli territories, thus preventing them from exploding on the ground. However, this strategy showed significant flaws during the Hamas incursion on Saturday, October 7, 2023, when the armed forces of the terrorist group committed several crimes against humanity against the populations of the cities of Sderot and Ashkelon. The Iron Dome system was nevertheless announced as infallible and was very costly: for each intercepted rocket, Israel had to spend 50,000 U.S. dollars. Israel benefits from financial aid from the United States to fund and develop its army, giving it a significant military advantage over Hamas.
Gaza is a very densely populated territory and is heavily enclosed by a strict blockade organized by Israel and Egypt.
