Opinions on whether Norway should join the European Union vary by political party affiliation. For instance, the voters of the Red Party and the Centre Party opposed a Norwegian EU membership the most. In contrast, voters of the Liberal Party and the Green Party were most positive. In total, over ** percent of the respondents in Norway were against the country joining the EU, compared to ** percent in favor. Norway last held a referendum on whether it should join the union in 1994, when **** percent of the population voted against joining the EU. Nevertheless, the country enjoys tight political and economic ties with the EU, and is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).
